A Giant Squid Visits a Japanese Harbor
These denizens of the deep usually lurk between 2,000 to 3,000 feet below the surface
A fisherman noticed the 12-foot-long giant squid swimming beneath fishing boats at the Mizuhashi Fisherina in Toyama prefecture, reports Jun Hongo for The Wall Street Journal.
“Whereas the ones caught in fishing nets are mostly dead and their colors have already turned white, the body of the giant squid swimming inside the marina was red,” says Tatsuya Wakasugi, the marina’s manager. The squid visited long enough for a diver to arrive and accompany the tentacled beast as it swam. The diver, Akinobu Kimura, filmed the encounter before ushering the squid back out toward the open ocean.
Okamoto managed to snare it with a rope, which he tied to his boat. He then transported the squid back to the port, but about 10 people were needed to haul it ashore.

PACIFIC GIANT OCTOPUS

The giant Pacific octopus grows bigger and lives longer than any other octopus species. The size record is held by a specimen that was 30 feet across and weighed more than 600 pounds.
Averages are more like 16 feet and 110 lbs.

What an amazing show and honor it was to have his work included with such a mega cosmetics company, and in New York's 'meatpacking District'. As well, this show with Kirk's 'Cephalopod' was broadcast on Channel 7 News in New York!

While on vacation in Ireland with my wife we stayed in Dublin then Dromoland Castle in Co. Clare. In Dublin, I purchased the latest issue of the (British) GQ Magazine at a Pharmacy. How amazing to be in Ireland, kicking back with an issue of GQ featuring my bronze giant squid 'Legend'. As well, I will never forget the walk in the Irish woods on castle grounds learning the art of Falconry!

Kirk McGuire makes all of his own master molds of each new sculpture or table. He is considered a 'Master Mold Maker'. Once working as The Monterey Sculpture Centers mold maker, and manager of their Mold Dept. Making molds one of many labor intensive 'high skill' steps in creating and producing a single bronze sculpture, or table.

HUGE HUMBOLDT SQUID BEAK

This huge beak was mailed to me from a
squid fisherman.
The powerful beak is not the only reason to be wary of the Humboldt squid. It is a fearsome predator also known, for good reason, as the 'Jumbo Squid', or 'Red Devil'. It possesses the large brain, colour-changing skill and excellent vision of other squid and to these, it adds an aggressive temperament, a two-metre long body, 36 sharp hooks in each of its 2,000 suckers, and a penchant for cannibalism.

TRITON SUBMARINES & 'LEGEND'

'Legend' at the 2015 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show featured with Triton Submarine LLC. Triton graciously hosted this show booth along with 'Legend' and a scale model of Tritons 3300/3 man sub that was used to locate and film the world's first giant squid. As seen on the Discovery Channel. Jim Harris piloted the Triton Sub, which found and filmed a giant squid for the very first time in History. Jim also wrote me on my website. This is what he said about my giant squid sculpture:
"I love your sculptures! Especially the Giant Squid! I am the pilot who drove the Triton submersible for Dr. Kubodera and Magic Man Sugita on our dive where we filmed the Giant Squid off Chi Chi Jima, Japan. I also had the pleasure to pilot dives on that trip for Dr. Steve O'Shea and Dr. Edie Widder. It was a good trip. When I saw your sculpture of the Giant Squid I said "that guy has got it!" Now....how am I gonna add one to my G-Squid collection? Keep up the good work."
