MONTEREY BAY / TIBURON, CA — Long before Hollywood cameras began capturing the deep-ocean terrors of the upcoming survival thriller Whalefall—releasing in theaters this October 16—marine artist Kirk McGuire had already cast the definitive visual spirit of that titanic struggle in solid bronze.

McGuire, who spent 28 formative years living along Monterey Bay mastering the complex, ancient art of hot-cast bronze foundry work, created his monumental sculpture "EPIC" in 2014 from his Tiburon Studio. The piece captures the raw anatomy and brutal, ancestral violence of a massive sperm whale locked in a deep-sea battle with a giant squid—the exact premise at the heart of the new 20th Century Studios motion picture.

The scientific accuracy and biological realism of McGuire's work are well-recognized by deep-ocean experts. Notably, Triton Submarines LLC—the legendary ocean exploration team that famously made history by first locating and filming a living giant squid at 3,000 feet—recently added McGuire's work to their collection.
