I am currently sculpting a 4-foot tall bronze memorial sculpture for the expansive 34-acre campus gardens of the college, which are the third-largest campus gardens in the United States! This sculpture will feature three pitcher plants, accompanied by several green tree frogs and an exquisite dragonfly! The endangered Green Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia oreophila) is becoming increasingly rare.
This memorial honors the cherished late Environmental Sciences Professor Dr. Jan Washburn. He was not only an Entomologist but also a speaker on global warming and an artist. It’s said that we would have shared a special bond due to our mutual love of nature. I sincerely wish I had the opportunity to know Jan. This sculpture has been made possible through the efforts of Joe Acanfora and other dear friends of Jan Washburn. Joe discovered my work while searching online, and we instantly connected! Together, we worked out the specifics, including my very first 'Zoom call' with the university garden curators and other decision-makers. Once they approved my initial sketches and a smaller model, I received the go-ahead to start creating this beautiful tribute to such an incredible man, who was adored by his friends and colleagues.
To this day, this project stands as one of the most meaningful endeavors in my sculpting career.
2025 A bronze memorial sculpture has been commissioned by the University of California Berkeley. Honoring Dr. Jan Washburn, and it depicts Jan's favorite plant, the endangered green pitcher plant.
